SJC City Hall News: Council to consider contract for Michael Graves-designed library project

From the City of San Juan Capistrano:

The City Council on Tuesday [Sept. 5, 2006] will consider awarding a $72,000 contract to an architectural firm, under a city plan to revamp the town’s 24-year-old architecturally renowned library for residents and future generations to come. The project is a top City Council priority.

The city in May sent out 36 requests for proposals, seeking architects interested in the opportunity to work with the Michael Graves Company on a "space-needs" evaluation and possible expansion. Costa Mesa-based Carrier Johnson was one of five firms that submitted proposals that ranged from $55,000 to $164,000. A six-member panel, which included representatives from the county library, city and Friends of the Library reviewed the proposals, interviewed applicants and recommend Carrier Johnson for the assessment and design work.

Michael Graves, an award-winning architect, designed the scenic 12,898-square foot library known for its distinctive postmodern design in the early 1980s. The regional library, which is part of the county’s library system, is situated just across from the Mission San Juan Capistrano.

Fast forward a couple decades – with a larger population and more technology demands-- and the facility has become technologically and space challenged.

The Graves’ expansion was envisioned extending along the west side of the library with access and views to its interior courtyard, home to the popular Multicultural Arts Series. The library space study will look at areas for a homework center/computer lab; magazine lounge; young adults; storage; additional work stations; and such. To meet programming needs, other areas within the facility might be reconfigured. The City Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5 in Council Chambers, 32400 Paseo Adelanto.

For more information, call [the city at] 949-493-1171.

Update: Branch manager Teri Garza announced, after the meeting, that the request for space assessment was passed unanimously by the city council.

San Juan Capistrano Library renovation project . . .

As San Juan Capistrano Regional branch visitors may have noticed, our library branch is now more than halfway into a year-long renovation project involving rebuilt columns, roof repairs, door and window restoration, repainting, drainage and irrigation system upgrades, and re-sod lawns.

The $868,000 project, which should be completed in December, represents the first upgrade to our 14,000-square-foot building since it originally opened in 1983.

The original intent of world-renowned architect
Michael Graves, when designing the library in adherence with municipal construction guidelines for San Juan Capistrano, was to use the Spanish Mission style to create a modern and functional library facility that still appears aesthetically natural in its location a block from the centuries-old Mission San Juan Capistrano.

In fact, more than one library patron who has visited the Mission in years past has been heard to joke that the scaffolding at our own library's main entrance seems a perfect model of the scaffolding seen at the Mission during its own renovation. But its purpose is not in keeping the library architecture in balance with the Mission's
renovation!

It will remain up until renovation at the front of the library is complete in September. In the meantime, whenever the front entrance is closed, follow the signs to enter the back way, through the courtyard.

When you next visit our library, expect further improvements as the renovation project steadily advances. And don't forget to check back here for renovation status reports!
