Celebrate San Juan Capistrano’s weeklong observance of National Historic Preservation Month!

San Juan Capistrano, with its rich agrarian past will embrace this year’s theme of “Views from the Front Porch: Exploring San Juan’s agrarian roots.” The celebration takes place from May 6th through the 12th and is co-sponsored by the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society, Friends of the Library, the Mission San Juan Capistrano, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The week includes a special panel presentation featuring a host of deep-rooted ranching and farming folks for an evening of "Exploring San Juan’s Agrarian Roots." The free presentation is on Monday, May 7th at 7 p.m. at the Mission San Juan Capistrano Soldier’s Barracks. Refreshments are included.

Then, on Saturday, May 12th, the historic building tour will take place between 10 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The tour will be a first of its kind in San Juan Capistrano offering an intimate glimpse inside historic buildings-- some never before opened to the public-- throughout the city via shuttle buses.

The Historic Building Tour will feature a host of structures, several of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Some of the showcased buildings include the Joel Congdon House (Victorian style built 1876); the Harrison House (Craftsman style built 1909); the Rios Adobe (built 1794 and continuously occupied by 10 generations of the Rios family); the Roger Y. Williams/Swanner property (Craftsman style built 1923); and the Arley Leck House (Craftsman style built 1917).

Advance tickets are now available here at the San Juan Capistrano Regional Library. Cost for tickets is $10 per person with proceeds going toward establishing an agricultural museum at the Joel Congdon House.
